Studies on Bacterial Enzymes
The meningococcus cell contains a peptonase enzyme which hydrolyzes the peptides and similar constituents of commercial "peptone." The activity of this enzyme is independent of the presence of the formed bacterial cell. The peptonase enzyme is more resistant to heat and to oxidation than is the maltase enzyme of the same bacteria.
متن کاملBacterial enzymes Hyaluronidase
Bacterial enzyme Hyaluronidase is a complex polysaccharide degrading enzyme that cleaves â-GlcNAc-(14) glycosidic linkage of Hyaluronate (HA) by â-elimination process. It is synthesized by a spectrum of grampositive bacteria which serve as potential contributors to a multitude of infectious diseases in human beings. Especially, group A streptococcus bacteria (GAS) have evolved several orders...
متن کاملStudies on bacterial utilization of uronic acids. III. Induction of oxidative enzymes in a marine isolate.
MacLeod et al. (1954) noted that a number of strains of bacteria from the marine environment which can not grow on fresh water media are dependent upon Na+, K+, and Mg++, whereas several similar isolates capable of growth on fresh water media have no Na+ dependence. A subsequent investigation of the effect of these metal ions on the viability in storage and the activity of oxidative systems of ...
متن کاملZone electrophoresis of enzymes in bacterial taxonomy.
The electrophoretic mobilities in starch gels have been determined for eight enzymes in extracts of representative cultures of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. These values were compared with each other and with those obtained from certain bacteria not in this family. The migrations of the eight enzymes were virtually identical for each of eight strains of Escherichia coli and for two ...
متن کاملThe Degradation of Heparin by Bacterial Enzymes
Extracts of acetone powders of Flavobacterium heparinum which have been adapted to heparin catalyze a rather extensive degradation of this mucopolysaccharide. This ‘Lheparinase” activity is due to the presence in the extract of a sulfamidase, a sulfesterase, and at least one glycosidase (1, 2). Such extracts also catalyze the hydrolysis of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate. This paper com...
